Suhl gained a worldwide reputation for its traditions in the production of firearms. 1535 was the beginning of the history of the gunsmithing trade. The unique junction of keeping up traditions, handicraft and modern production, services, vocational training, sport shooting and other leisure activities shape the image of the town. As an independent town and centre of South Thuringia Suhl is also known because of its regional, partly national function as administrative, cultural and shopping town.

 The city of Suhl is located in the federal state of Thuringia - Germany's centre - in the region South Thuringia which borders the north Bavarian Franconia. Suhl lies at the junction of motorways A71 and A73 known as the Thuringian Forest Motorway. With its tunnels and bridges it connects the town perfectly to the German and European highway networks.

By train the town can be accessed every hour since it is linked to the Inter-City rail service stations  Erfurt and Würzburg and thus has a connection to Germany's big cities. The nearest international airport is Erfurt, which is 60 km away. In Suhl-Goldlauter an airfield can be used for smaller aeroplanes and gliders.
